The History of Severndroog Castle

Severndroog Castle, a unique wedding venue situated in Shooters Hill, London, carries a rich historical tapestry dating back to 1784. The castle was built by Lady James of Eltham as a tribute to her husband, Sir William James, who captured the Pirate Fortress of Suvarnadurg (Severndroog in English translation) on India’s west coast. An architectural gem, it was designed by the renowned architect Richard Jupp with Gothic-style elements. Over time, the castle fell into disrepair and was closed to the public. However, its historical and architectural significance prompted the launch of the Severndroog Castle Building Preservation Trust in 2003. Their diligent efforts visible in a decade-long restoration ended in 2014 when the castle reopened as a licensed wedding venue. Today, Severndroog Castle is celebrated not only for its alluring history but its panoramic views of London. Its romantic aura combined with its rich English-Indian heritage make it a picturesque location and a favourite choice for many couples seeking a unique site for their special day.
